Natural History Competition 2013-14
This year, the club's Annual Natural History competition was held on 30th April 2014.
Firstly a big thank-you to everyone who entered; without your work we wouldn’t have a competition. Secondly, congratulations to those successful authors and, in particular, well done to Les Beardmore for ‘Black Headed Gulls Fighting’ and Dave Bowen for ‘Striped Shieldbug on Wild Elephant Garlic’ who won the Novice/Intermediate and Advanced trophies respectively.
The competition was made more interesting by the wide range of subject matter; in addition to the ever popular bird images there were insects, flowers, fungi, mammals and even fossils.
What stood out most of all was the quality of the prints; to see 70 prints on the viewing easels was quite a sight; even the non-nature photographers could not fail to be impressed.
John Jones ARPS, our judge on the night, did an excellent job. His expertise in natural history was clearly apparent and his critique was fair and consistent. His final selection was quite difficult with many strong contenders. A clear indication as to how far nature photography has progressed; successful images need that “Wow” factor to impress judges.
The results were as follows:
