This year our annual outing saw 28 members go to Great Yarmouth on Friday 26th April. On the way down a few of us stopped off at Angelsey Abbey which is a National Trust property on the outskirts of Cambridge.

After settling in we all met up for our first evening meal. Some daring members decided to try the Chefs Special which turned out to be meatballs in a BBQ sauce which was an interesting combination to say the least.

Saturday:
After a hearty breakfast (some members having two breakfasts) our first destination of the day was Caister to photograph the groynes. It has become somewhat of a tradition that cake is eaten at every opportunity on our breaks and so we partook of elevenses consisting of some very nice fruit cake made by Sue.

Our next stop was Horsey Windpump which is a National Trust property and not far from Caister.
As it is on the Broads there were ample opportunities to photograph not only the wind pump but also the surrounding area. Unfortunately due to weather conditions the pump was not open to visitors but the cafe was where some of us had lunch.

We then travelled about a mile up the road to see the seals. We were amazed at how close you can get to them as they seem to be used to people. Many a shot was taken and we could have spent much longer there but time was pressing and we needed to be back at the hotel. However, before we left the carpark we were treated to another lovely slice of cake, this time provided Rosa.

The evening meal was uneventful and as usual after tea we rearranged the chairs in the lounge to accommodate us all. We chatted and were treated to even more lovely cake this time provided by Sharon.

Sunday:
Today we said goodbye to a few members who had to return home. Our first stop of the day was Ranworth Broad Nature Reserve where we had a gentle stroll to the visitor centre. There was a viewing platform there where we could watch the birdlife on the water and surrounding reed beds.

Another Nature Reserve was our next stop but unfortunately with the exception of a couple of Marsh Harrier in the distance, we did not see anything so we went back to the carpark and partook of cake.

The Lion Inn was a welcome sight and it was here that we had lunch. Being an inn some local ales and ciders were tasted. Thorne Mill drainage pump was a short walk away and we were blessed with good weather conditions allowing us ample opportunity to get some shots of it and also another windmill further up. It was a beautiful setting with sailing boats, windmills, and reed beds, just how you would imagine the Norfolk Broads to be.

On Monday the last of the weekenders left this morning leaving 12 of us here for the rest of the week. After saying goodbye we headed off to Sea Pallin to photograph the sea defences. On the way there, as the weather was sunny we had a pit stop at Horsey Windpump to see if we could get different images from the day before.

Lunch was at a lovely cafe called Poppylands. This cafe is decorated with 1940’s war time memorabilia and had been recommended to us by members who had gone there at the weekend.

After lunch as it was sunny we went to photograph the seals again then before we knew it, it was time to head back to the hotel. Time flies when you are enjoying yourself.

Norfolk has many windmills but it also has lots of pretty villages, seaside resorts and other interesting places such as Burgh Castle, Southwold and Ludham. The rest of the week was spent visiting such places.

These breaks don’t come about by themselves, they take a lot of organising. As usual Pete and Angie have done a brilliant job for which we are all very grateful.

April 27th saw 18 of us make our way to The Royal Hotel in Weymouth. As with previous years, some were there for a long weekend and others for the week. We all met up for our evening meal and on one of the tables an extra portion of onion rings and potato wedges was ordered. These were eagerly devoured by all on that table.

The Saturday saw us rise early and after a hearty breakfast we made our way to Portland Bill via Chesil Beach where we saw some friendly fishermen and a not so friendly dog. Once at Portland Bill we split up to take individual photographs of Pulpit rock, the lighthouse and some of the many birds that come to feed at the reserve nearby. Light refreshments were served at the cafe including cream teas for some and then we made our way back to the hotel where some of us has a stroll around the harbour before the evening meal which again was supplemented on one table by additional potato wedges and onion rings. The evening entertainment at the hotel had some people toe tapping and others took themselves off to the basement for a game of snooker.

Kimmeridge bay and Durdle Door were our destination for Sunday. As we were making our way to Kimmeridge we came across some banger racers which were just setting up for a day of racing. As we were in convoy, our leader decided to carry on to Kimmeridge. Once there, we discussed what to do and some people decided to return to the banger racing after photographing fossils in the stones at Kimmeridge whilst others decided to carry on to Durdle Door. Back at the hotel we met up for our evening meal which again was supplemented by wedges and onion rings on the one table.

Monday morning saw the party reduced to 10 as some of our group returned home. After saying our goodbyes we headed off to Swanage, Lulworth Cove and then on to Durdle Door. The walk down to the beach and then back up is very steep and it was amazing how most of us managed to find things to stop and photograph on our way back up! With only 10 of us for the evening meal, we were all able to sit at the same table and to our great surprise, one of the guests who had gone home had arranged for wedges and onion rings to be served with the meal. Thanks Ray.

On Tuesday we headed to Lyme Regis. Whilst on the Cob taking long exposure shots, we noticed storm clouds coming our way.  Rather than gather up our stuff and head to the nearest pub like sensible people do, we made sure our tripods we secure and made ourselves ready for the onslaught of wind and rain. As it happened, the storm only lasted 10 minutes and was not as dramatic as we would have liked. With the sun now shining we soon dried out and after a fish and chip lunch, headed to West Bay for an ice cream and a spot of fossil hunting. One of us found what looked like a piece of prehistoric sea bed, but it turned out to be a lump of concrete.

As the weather forecast was not good for Wednesday, we decided to visit not only one but two National Trust properties. The childhood home of Thomas Hardy which is at Higher Brockhampton and Max Gate where he lived in his later years. With the weather getting warmer as the day went on, a walk around the old harbour in Weymouth was taken before we headed back to the hotel.

You cannot go to the Jurassic coast and not go looking for fossils and so on Thursday as it was our last full day we returned to Lyme Regis and when the tide was right went on to Charmouth beach which is known to be a 5 star area for fossil hunting. Undaunted from our last try at fossil hunting and after speaking to a fossil hunter and learning some tips, we left no stone unturned. Although we did not find a dinosaur, to our great surprise and delight we did find some small fossils and in the evening after our meal we showed each other our finds. Those that were looking up rather than down at Charmouth were given the opportunity of photographing some paragliders that were taking advantage of the sunshine.

Friday was soon here and time to go home. Many thanks to Pete and Ange who once again excelled themselves in organising a lovely week away.

A weekend was arranged for members of the club to stay at the Prince of Wales hotel in Berkeley in the Cotswold’s. Friday the 6th October saw some members start the weekend at Slimbridge Wetland Centre which was about 10 minutes from the hotel. Having spent a few hours photographing the wildlife, they then proceeded to the hotel to check in. Those travelling down from work went straight to the hotel and we all met up for drinks before our evening meal.

Saturday 7th October

We started today with a hearty breakfast. Some of the group took advantage of the buffet breakfast and had three full english. We then went to Shearness Docks. Whilst at the docks, we were invited to have a tour of a railway renovation site which was in the docks area. This was unscheduled and we all found it very interesting.

After lunch we travelled to Purton to take images of the boats, some of which had been deliberately beached to help preserve the banks. Over the years these boats have deteriorated leaving only skeleton remains.

Back at the hotel we had a very nice evening meal and afterwards sat in the hotel lounge chatting.
We are fortunately blessed with members wives who enjoy baking and now is starting to become a tradition to eat cake on our weekends away. Our thanks to Rosa and Sue for the scrummy cakes and to Clare who provided nibbles.

Sunday 8th October

Today we went to Westonbirt Arboretum to photograph the Autumn colours. Some of the members made their way home after that whilst a few of us went to enjoy the sunset at the Tyndale monument at North Nibley.

Our thanks to Pete and Angie for organising another good weekend.
We look forward to our next adventure which we hope will be in April.

Our trip to Torquay began with the arrival of 16 members at the Tor Point Hotel which is situated about 1 mile from the sea front. After the evening meal many of the group went for a walk down to the sea front to stretch our legs and take some evening shots.

Saturday 6th May 2017

A few hardy photographers got up early to see if they could catch the sun rise at Paignton Pier. Unfortunately the sun did not want to play  but never the less they enjoyed the sea air and waves crashing round the pier.
After a hearty breakfast the group went to Cockington Village. The weather was kind to us with only a few light showers throughout the day. As Cockington is not far from Torquay, some members walked whilst others drove. The approach on foot was through a lovely wooded area which leads to the “cholcolate box’ village of Cockington. We stopped  for morning coffee. We then continued looking round and enjoyed lunch  at the Drum pub in the village. The quaintness of the village was enhanced by a cricket match on the village pitch which sits in what can only be described as a ‘bowl’. This gave plenty of opportunity to  take photographs with undisturbed backgrounds.
The walk back into Torquay saw many members walk down to the marina for a well earned
ice-cream.
After the evening meal some of the group took an evening constitutional back down to the marina to try some night shots before returning for a drink and chat with the rest of the group.

Sunday 7th May 2017

Today we used various modes of transport to visit and explore Dartmouth.
We started by catching the bus from Torquay to Paignton and then boarded the steam train pulled by 4277 Hercules which took us on a very scenic journey to Kingswear stopping at various stations on the way.
We then crossed the river Dart using the Kingswear passinger ferry to Dartmouth where we had just enough time to have elevenses before embarking on an hour long trip up the river Dart to Dittersham and back.
The scenery was beautiful and the weather glorious. Once back on dry  land we had lunch and explored Dartmouth before reversing our journey back to Torquay.
There were a variety of photo opportunities and a lovely day was had by all.
Back at the hotel after another hearty evening meal, some members went for an evening photo shoot by Paignton Pier.

Monday 8th May 2017

Today saw the majority of the party head for home with a few of us staying the rest of the week.

Our thanks to Pete & Angie for organising a truly wonderful weekend was had by all with a mixture of exploring, photography and social gathering.

The day started at 11am with 22 of us gathering for an image hunt whereby we had to visit five named places and take images on three given subject per place. Those taking part were given a pack containing; the rules, maps showing how to get to the venues, plus a check list of the subject titles for each venue.

These were:

Planters Garden Centre: Go Potty, Relax & Spiky Situation Elford Hall Gardens: Something Big,
Blooming Lovely & Creepy Crawley Fradley Junction: Movement, Colourful & Lock Middleton Hall: Something Old, That's Crafty & The Sky's the Limit Lichfield: Anything you fancy, Ice Cream & Church Exterior.

There was no strict order in which people had to visit each venue so once everyone had arrived and had been given their pack off they went in different directions.

The venues were selected to give a wide variety of subjects and facilities for food and drink and rest stops.  As can be seen from some of the photographs taken, some of the members found the refreshments too inviting to pass up.

We were blessed with good weather throughout the day and everybody enjoyed going to venues that in some cases they had never been to before.

The day culminated with us enjoying a lovely meal at the Horse & Jockey pub in Lichfield where we finally said our goodbyes at about 9pm.  We look forward to the 2 November when there will be a review of the images taken and it will be interesting to see people's interpretation of the subjects.
The images attached are of members taking part and hopefully after the review we will be able to display some of the members images on this site.

Friday 25th April saw some 28 members of the Club travel to Llandudno for a long weekend break; unfortunately two never made it, but that’s another story. They came in all directions; some using satnav directly via the M6 and A55, some using a good old road map along the A5. Comfort breaks at garden centres and cafes en route; Bodnant Gardens a final stop before the Marine Hotel, The Promenade, Llandudno.

Evening meal at 6.30 saw yet another casualty when little Sue was hit by a bout of sickness; was it the cockles and ice cream eagerly devoured on the pier during the afternoon?  Phil and Mike capitalized on the situation with double helping of main and pudding. Friday night’s entertainment was the usual fare of bingo with the other Sue winning £10 for a line. Birthday Boy David, ably assisted by tall John, contributed to the entertainment acting as backing singers/dancers to the crooneress. Watch out for the video.

Saturday morning Sue was at the breakfast table making up for lost time. The morning saw the group in Conway, swarming around the harbour, falconry  display, Telford’s bridge and the Town’s walls. Ken opted for a leisurely boat trip around the Conway estuary. Much advice was given regarding photographic techniques and camera settings, then exhausted, everyone descended to cafes and the chippy for well-earned refreshments. The weather had been kind; plenty of sunshine but a little breezy. Only one reported casualty this morning; a combination of vertigo and claustrophobia forced Jayne down from the Town Wall.

The Great Orme beckoned for the majority of us; fabulous views over the Conway estuary and Llandudno promenade saw the cameras out in force. St. Tudno’s church was once again a popular venue with its’ beautiful stained glass windows. After a couple of hours everyone returned to the hotel. Angie and Rita took a more energetic route down the recently constructed pathway, which conveniently comes out near the Grand Hotel; need I say more, afternoon tea etc.

After Friday night’s scintillating entertainment we decided that Saturday night would be camera night. So out on to the promenade we went camera and tripods to the fore. Nice sunset over the Great Orme and afterglow on the Little Orme. Our image making session was in full swing when it was rudely interrupted by none other than the local constabulary; apparently picked up on CCTV the Police were intrigued by the presence of the “Press” in large numbers in Llandudno and two community officers were dispatched to investigate. After extensive questioning one of the Phils was temporarily taken into custody!

Sunday morning dawned brightly and we all sallied forth to Anglesey with Beaumaris as first port of call. Phil and Teresa took to the air on the big wheel whilst everyone else sunned themselves and shopped for lunch. On to Penmon Point and cream teas after a spot of  seawatching and long exposures. On our return journey we called in at Garth Pier, Bangor; a little Welshman threw a tantrum over 20 pence and ended up with 50 pence for his trouble!

The evening saw the climax of Angie’s quiz and brain-teaser, in the form of guessing the number of items in her tin box; Pauline was £ 27 better off! John, Alison, Jayne, Clare and Brian had started their trek home during the day; it’s hard on the workers.

Monday morning saw a mass exodus and the long journey home. Surprisingly, nobody really wanted to go and most stopped of at Bodnant Gardens, which were bathed in glorious sunshine.

Alas all good things have to end. Looking forward to the next time!

A Llandudno Gallery has been started; please add your images.

Pete & Angie.
